BEGINNING 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR
The Open Arms early childhood program is committed to an understanding that parents, teachers, and administrators are a team working collaboratively in order to provide a nurturing and safe environment that promotes the development of the whole child using a play-based educational model within a loving, Christian preschool.
All children develop and mature at different stages. Junior Kindergarten is intended to give learners who need additional time to mature cognitively, physically, and emotionally an opportunity to do so in a safe and secure environment. Upon completion of Junior Kindergarten, learners will move on to a traditional kindergarten program.
An integrated approach of teacher-directed and child-initiated learning will allow your learner many opportunities to engage with print, manipulate curricular materials, explore and discover ideas, interact with others, and develop at their own unique rate. This program fosters the development of a positive self-image and enhances learner’s growth toward their individual potential.
Junior Kindergarten will provide learning experiences and opportunities for learners similar to the kindergarten classroom, using an adjusted kindergarten curriculum developed from the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs), but taught at a pace and intensity dependent on individual readiness. This program will strive to help children become risk takers, problem solvers, and decision makers. Our ultimate goal is for children to be successful in the public schools.
Junior Kindergarten offers an adjusted kindergarten curriculum and activities. Emphasis is placed on the following curricular areas:
- Language and Literacy
- Social Studies
- Social Experiences
- Visual Arts and Dramatic Play
